Mobile Mechanics or DIY?: What to Choose to Fix Common Problems in Your Jeep Wrangler

Jeep owners usually consider themselves very independent individuals. That’s why most of you who own Jeep Wranglers love the freedom only a Jeep can offer.

You can drive to the local mega-mark with the doors off and the ceiling open, the wind buffeting your face, just as easily as you can cross the Mohave Desert, or scale the side of a mountain during a blinding snowstorm.

But Jeep Wranglers also come with common problems that require repair somewhere down the road. You have your choice when it comes to repairing them.

You can hire a mobile car repair service, like the ones found in the San Francisco bay area. Or you can do it yourself (DIY).

By using the former, you don’t have to go through the hassle of leaving your precious Jeep in a traditional shop for a couple of days and then pay an arm and a leg to get it back.

In the case of the latter, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you were able to repair your Jeep on your own.

In either case, you will have the confidence of knowing that if your Jeep breaks down and/or gets stuck in the woods, help will soon be on the way. Or if you choose to DIY, help has already arrived in the form of yourself.

That said, here are some common problems that you will likely face with your Jeep Wrangler and how you should go about repairing them.

Steering Issues

According to Youfixcars.com, one of the most common and annoying problems Jeep Wrangler owners face is what’s called “loose drift.” This particular steering problem most likely occurs from a poorly welded intermediate shaft.

This is not a problem for you to fix on your own since it can be a difficult repair. You need to either see your dealer to replace that part of the steering wheel and the steering gearbox.

Or, instead of paying through the nose at a dealership, you might hire a certified mobile auto repair service that can fix the problem right in your driveway.

The next steering problem that can potentially have deadly consequences if not repaired, is an issue that’s commonly referred to as the Jeep Wrangler Death Wobble.

It occurs almost exclusively on the highway anywhere between 50-65 MPH. The steering wheel begins to shake so badly, if not violently, that it’s possible to lose total control. Again, like the loose drift problem, you need to rely on the expertise of a mobile mechanic to fix this issue.

You can also resolve steering issues by replacing the sway bar, the tires, and the shocks. You can use a mobile service to make these repairs. But if you know what you’re doing, you can easily DIY and save a little cash along the way.

Electrical System Issues

Jeep Wranglers also experience their fair share of electrical issues. These issues can be directly related to the vehicle’s safety. Some Jeep owners have stated that after putting their Jeep in cruise control mode, it remained locked in cruise control even after depressing the brakes.

Electrical safety is an issue for neither a mobile repair auto service nor DIY. This issue has been handled by a recent total Jeep recall requiring a free, but nonetheless inconvenient, dealership repair.

TIPM Issues

Jeep Wranglers are said to be infamous for having Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) problems. It’s one of the biggest challenges you’ll face with your Jeep. A malfunctioning TIPM can result in windows that won’t roll down and windshield wipers that won’t operate.

There are other issues too, like a radio that might not operate or a heating/cooling system that doesn’t work properly. There are also cases where turn signals and headlights don’t work.

Can you fix TIPM problems on your own?

If you’re knowledgeable about integrated power systems, you can give it a go. But you’re probably better off with a trustworthy mobile mechanic who is familiar with Jeep Wranglers (and there are many of them) to reply on a proper system fix.

On occasion, Jeep Wranglers have been known to die right in the middle of a drive either on the road or even worse, in the deep woods.

That’s why even if you are a DIY enthusiast when it comes to Jeep repair, it’s imperative that you strike up a relationship with a trustworthy, certified mobile mechanic who is not only is familiar with Jeep Wranglers but who can also provide an emergency tow out of the woods or off a busy highway.
