After three decades and years of speculation, the vaunted Jeep Wagoneer and its fancier cousin, the Grand Wagoneer, are indeed back. They’ll compete with a host of SUVs from a myriad of manufacturers. But that’s another story. Right now, let’s look at the Grand Wagoneer vs. Wagoneer – what are the key differences?
Design
There’s no overt difference in appearances. They’re basically the same size and they each have nameplate lettering across the front, rear, and sides, plus roof racks and the same-style windows. But a closer look turns up a more refined grille for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Its chrome-framed, copper-colored tinted windows as well as black roof and higher-quality LED lighting are great additions.
Display
Okay, here’s a major difference: if LCD is your jam, you’ll be in display heaven in the Grand Cherokee. This thing has up to seven screens – all standard with the Series III trim. The Wagoneer comes standard with the cluster and main center touchscreen; three other screens are optional.
Powerplant
It’s likely no surprise that both these haulers are powered by brawny V-8s. But the engines are different. The Wagoneer’s powerplant is 5.7-liters with the 48-volt mild-hybrid system. We’re talking 392 horses and 404 pound-feet of torque and a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds.
Big Cuz – aka Grand Wagoneer – gets a 6.4-liter V-8 that puts out 471 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque, sufficient to get you to 60 mph in six ticks. The engine also can tow a tad under 10,000 pounds.
Suspension and 4×4
The Wagoneer, which has a body-on-frame construction, comes with rear-wheel drive but three 4×4 systems are available. Its standard steel coil spring suspension renders an eight-inch ground clearance. Go with the Quadra-Lift air suspension, and you get up to 10 inches of clearance.
Meanwhile, four-wheel-drive is standard in the Grand Wagoneer, as is Quadra-Lift suspension, which can dip the ride for ingress and egress, or for enhanced aerodynamics when driving.
Wheels
Twenty-inch wheels are standard on Wagoneer models, although 18-inch off-road wheels and tires are available, as are blingier 22s. Grand Wagoneer models have standard 20- or 22-inch aluminum wheels with four different finishes plus a 3D wheel cap with a Wagoneer logo. Twenty-two-inch polished wheels come with the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian model.
Vehicle Fit and Finish
As you may expect, the Grand Wagoneer has the best leather and pricier trim. It also has American walnut on the dashboard, doors, and center console. The Wagoneer, however, is wood-less. Neither ride has any woodgrain on the outside, a departure from the original models.
Sounds Systems
Yes, indeed: for the first time, the Grand Wagoneer gets a primo 95-watts McIntosh audio system and 23 speakers. The Wagoneer comes with an Alpine system and nine speakers, although a lower-watt, 19-speaker McIntosh system is available.
Comfort and Seating
Whereas the Wagoneer comes with three-zone climate control, the Grand Wagoneer has a four-zone system with touchscreens in the first two rows.
Twelve-way leather-trimmed seats are in the Wagoneer, but the Grand Wagoneer has buttery Palermo skins for its 24-way adjustable front seats. If you want, you can get second-row captain’s chairs for the Wagoneer. They’re standard on Big Cuz.
Price
We’ve already mentioned the 30-thou difference. The Wagoneer starts at $59,995 for a Series I model and can go as high as $74,995, depending on trim. A base model Grand Wagoneer will set you back $88,995 with the top trim starting at $105,995.
