The Grand National is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, with millions of people placing their bets as 40 horses take on 30 of the most gruelling fences in horse racing.

The event returns in 2021 after being run only virtually last year, with Aintree set to welcome some of the best runners and riders around, all looking to get a slice of that £1million prize pot.

Set the Stakes

Firstly, you need to think about the stakes involved. How much do you want people to pay for a horse, and how do you want the prize pot to be divided? Some sweepstakes offer the full prize money to the winner, while others will split the prize pot between the top three or four horses that finish, with the winner earning the most, and the fourth placed horse the least.

This will give more incentive for people to sign up if there are more prizes on offer. You then need to set the stakes. £1 per horse would give you a £40 prize pot to play with, while £5 per horse would offer up £200, so you could look at £100 to the winner, £50 for second place, and £25 each to third and fourth. It’s entirely up to you but laying out the stakes and prizes before signing people up is a must.

Selecting the Horses

When the Grand National is underway, people have all manner of methods to choose their horse, from the colour of the jockeys’ silks, the name of the horse, to more important aspects such as form and odds. However, all this should be irrelevant in a sweepstake, with horses drawn at random.

There are many randomisers you can use online or if you’re all together in the office you can draw pieces of paper from a hat or box to determine the horse. It’s always useful to keep a spreadsheet for this as the organiser, so you are aware of who has which horse, and more importantly who has paid their stake.

Post-Race

If you’re lucky enough to be able to watch the race together on April 10, you can dish out the winnings to people there and then, otherwise it’s best to wait until you’re back in the office.
