The pandemic has dramatically increased online activity, and new online businesses were even born. As such, the internet became the central hub for commerce. On any website you visit, you’d always see ads. The algorithm became smarter as well, showing us ads of brands we’d likely purchase from just because we visited its Instagram page.
Our increasing dependence on the internet can make us wonder if print advertising will still see a future. Sure, you may find a brochure lying on your windshield occasionally, but what do you do with it? Chances are you toss it away without even giving it a look.
The only time you’d probably look at it is if it’s from a familiar brand. But even then, you may still forget about that brochure after a couple of minutes.
In 2018, members of the Forbes Communication Council gave their two cents about the future of print advertising. Most of them agreed that print ads will stay relevant in the years to come, so if that’s the case, consider these types of print ads for your small business, as they’re the ones that remain effective in today’s digital age:
1. Newspaper Advertising
Newspaper ads can be seen on national, local, and community newspapers. According to Dun & Bradstreet, small businesses may have an edge over national businesses when they release newspaper ads. But they should choose the right kind of newspaper. For instance, if your target market lives around a specific town, a local newspaper should be your pick. It won’t make sense for you to advertise in a national newspaper such as USA Today.
2. Magazine Advertising
Similar to newspaper ads, magazine ads are seen in regional or national magazines. It’s an effective way to brand your business and present it creatively. Appearances may not matter as much if you just want to encourage sales, but if you want to increase your visibility in the market, the look of your ads is crucial.
You might notice that most luxury brands, from home improvement to fashion, advertising in magazines. That’s because luxury customers value tangible ad platforms. Glossy magazine pages leave an impression that digital ads cannot replicate. It’s as if the pages add a literal weight to the brand’s presence.
3. Outdoor Advertising
Outdoor advertising can be described as an umbrella term for billboards, bus benches, and transit ads, as well as the ad outside your shop. They work effectively for promoting your brand in specific geographical areas.
The ad outside your shop is the most important type of outdoor ad. Your signage itself can act as one. It has to attract customers at first glance without being garish. In addition, it should contain enough information on what your brand is and what it offers.
To get an idea of what effective signage looks like, drive or walk around your town and see which business establishment catches your attention. Chances are it has the most attractive signage. Avoid scrutinizing each signage, because the point of your “test” is to identify which business can leave the best first impression. If you pass an establishment that you didn’t look at twice, they’ve already failed your test.
As for billboards, they’re most effective when located close to the business advertised. If you run a carwash, for example, putting up a billboard of your shop somewhere along the busiest highway of your area will help you attract more customers.
After all, people will be in their cars when they see it, so they can easily remember the last time they had their autos professionally washed.
Bus bench ads are often a complement to billboards. It’s highly effective in increasing brand awareness, as it can be seen by 35,000 to 50,000 people every day. But again, the business advertised should be located within the bus’s route.
The point of advertising in a bus is to make its passengers consider your products or services because they can get them nearby.
Lastly, transit ads refer to the ads you see on car doors. Company cars, taxicabs, and buses usually have them. You can also install one on your personal vehicle to make your neighborhood aware of your small business. The ad won’t stick to your car permanently anyway, because it’s just held in place by high-quality custom car magnets.
Transit ads are also highly visible, hence effective in raising brand awareness. To maximize its reach, check with your city’s mass transit department or a local bus company if you can rent ad spaces on one or more of their fleet.
Though nearly all businesses shifted to an online model because of the pandemic, it doesn’t mean print advertising has lost its touch. Now that commercial establishments have reopened, and the world is preparing to return to normal, physical customer presence will increase again, so print ads will remain essential.
