Animals Close to Extinction in 2021

Years ago, there used to be many animals and a variety of species but due to environmental factors and hunting, these animals are becoming scarce.In this article, Helen Lee Schifter wants to shed light on some of the animals that are few and far between include the black rhino, orangutan, sea turtle, tiger, and African elephant.

The black rhino is called the Diceros Bicornis and is considered critically endangered. These animals are large in size weighing about 1,760-3,080 pounds and are located in savannas, woodlands, and forest areas. The black rhino is known to be poached and trafficked by hunters. Although the numbers have gone up over the past 20 years, the rhino is still considered critically endangered.

The cute orangutan that has red fur with the scientific name of Pongo abelii has a population of about 104,700. These animals weigh up to 200 pounds and are considered the man of the forest. The orangutan eats food such as lychees, mangos, figs, and water. The male orangutan has a throat sac that is used to make loud vocalizations. These animals are located near Singapore

Beautiful sea turtles have the scientific name of Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae families. They live in open waters and coasts. There are seven different species of sea turtles throughout the ocean. Unfortunately, due to human activities such as slaughtering for their meat, eggs, skin, and shells, these sea turtles are becoming more extinct. Further, climate change has resulted in less nesting and hatching of sea turtle eggs.

Tigers have the scientific name Panthera tigris and are located in the rainforests, savannas, and grasslands in Asia. They weigh about 220-660 pounds. These tigers can eat up to eighty pounds of meat at one time and give birth to about two and four cubs every two years. Tigers are becoming more extinct due to poachers and habitat loss due to human overpopulation. The tiger population is only about 3,900, this is not a large amount and it continues to decline each year.

The scientific name for these animals is the Loxodont Africana and there are about four hundred thousand left in the world. The African elephant herd lives across 37 countries throughout Africa. They are highly vulnerable due to poachers’ ivory hunting. These animals weigh six tons and are about 19-24 feet in length.

She believes in veganism to ensure her actions are saving animals and the planet. Humans need to take a better approach to protect their environment and the wild animals to prevent extinction. Some examples of a better approach are to reduce the use of car emissions. Instead of taking the car, if a store is within walking distance, take a good walk. Schifter believes recycling as much as possible by sorting your trash. There are many cities and towns that offer this option and it’s important to do our part by recycling glass, plastic, and cardboard for reuse. If not, it just goes in a landfill for potential animal exposure. Further, recycling and refusing to use plastic can help save and protect animals.
