Your Guide to Lab Created Diamonds vs. Real Diamonds

The average cost of an engagement ring was $5,900 in 2019.

What if we told you that you can save up to 30% on the exact same ring without sacrificing quality?

Buy an alternative engagement ring with a lab grown diamond.

We know what you’re thinking. Why would you buy lab created diamonds vs. real diamonds? Isn’t the real thing always better?

Keep reading and we’ll answer all your questions.

Lab Created Diamonds vs. Real Diamonds

Lab-created diamonds are exactly the same as mined diamonds. They are graded the same way and have the same chemical makeup.

The only difference is where they came from.

Up until recently, those wanting to avoid the high costs or problematic nature of mined diamonds had to resort to diamond look-alikes such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Don’t be fooled because cubic zirconia and moissanite, while looking a lot like diamonds, are not diamonds.

A lab-grown diamond, on the other hand, is a diamond.

How Diamonds Are Grown in a Lab

There are two methods of making lab diamonds: High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) method and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method.

With HPHT, a diamond seed is placed either on a belt press, cubic press or split sphere press. These presses create an environment with extremely high pressure and temperature.

The diamond seed is placed into carbon, and when heated, the carbon atoms attach to the seed and create a diamond crystal.

CVD uses a method similar to HPHT, but the diamond seed is placed in a chamber filled with methane gas. When the chamber is heated, the carbon atoms in the gas attach to the seed, creating a diamond crystal.

Benefits of a Lab-Grown Diamond

If you still aren’t sure where you stand in the lab-created diamonds vs. real diamonds debate, consider these benefits of lab grown diamond rings.

Because lab-grown diamonds passes through fewer hands, they are 20-30% cheaper than mined diamonds. Don’t let the savings fool you–these diamonds are just as valuable as mined gems.

Additionally, lab-grown diamonds are ethically-sourced. Many mined diamonds are blood diamonds because the industry funds violence and exploits workers.

According to Time Magazine, about 25% of diamonds mined before 2003 were illegally traded. While that number has reduced to 5-10%, approximately 140,000 carats of diamond were smuggled from the Central African Republic since 2013.

You can’t be positive if your mined diamond was part of an exploitative mining operating. With a diamond from a lab, you can be 100% sure that it is ethically sourced.

Finally, lab-grown diamonds are better for the environment. It takes significantly less energy to grow a diamond in a lab than it takes to create one in nature.

Don’t Break the Bank for Diamonds Ever Again

Don’t rule out lab created diamonds just because they didn’t come from the ground. Now that you have more information on the lab created diamonds vs. real diamonds debate, you can make the best decision for your needs.
