From conduit systems to windows, doors, and pools, fiberglass products are becoming more popular than ever before. There are many reasons why fiberglass has become a more preferred material over alternatives such as steel, PVC, and wood. Below are some of the reasons why you should consider choosing it for your home as well!
Cost-effective
In the old days, fiberglass was new and rather expensive. But like LED TVs, their prices have become much more reasonable these days. Besides, more and more people are beginning to recognize the fact that in the long run, fiberglass is actually more cost-effective. The prices are stable unlike with steel, and fiberglass doesn’t require as much in terms of warranty work and maintenance since it’s stronger yet lighter. That’s why shipping costs for them are lower.
Using them for conduit systems also makes for a more economical installation. The lightweight fiberglass allows workers to carry them easily. This makes the installation faster and thus labor costs can be reduced significantly. Deadlines can also be met more easily.
It’s stronger than metal on a pound per pound basis
It’s highly resistant to corrosion so it won’t rust. It can withstand a wide range of temperatures and add the fact that it won’t warp as well. It can be made to be fire-resistant so it may char but it will definitely not burn. It can also be impervious to a wide range of chemicals.
It’s this reason why even household items are being made from fiberglasses, such as windows and doors. Many other marine items, like boats, kayaks, and surfboards use fiberglass due to their inherent durability.
Design versatility
When it comes to molding fiberglass, there aren’t really any restrictions when it comes to shape and form. Thus, fiberglass items can be molded to look visually appealing while still being structurally strong and durable. They can be made in smaller parts that can then be joined easily without any sort of threading at all. This is also the same reason why it’s the go-to material for boats, pools, doors, and windows. Even basketball backboards are made of fiberglass.
This makes fiberglass a suitable material to house electrical wires and other types of electronics. Since fiberglass is also radio frequency transparent, it can house electronics without disrupting their performance. It can then also protect workers from what’s inside the fiberglass.
UV resistant
Fiberglass is great for outdoor use because the UV rays of the sun don’t damage them. Other environmental factors, such as water and snow also pose no threat.
Better acoustics
Fiberglass tends to absorb sound waves rather than bounce off them. Thus, it provides great acoustics so the noise of machinery can be reduced and you can achieve your preferred sound levels much easier.
Minimal contraction and expansion
Fiberglass doesn’t expand and contract as much when faced with extreme cold or heat compared to other materials. This means that it doesn’t contract as much when exposed to stress.
A Brief History
During World War II, people started using fiberglass for certain applications. It was invented by Russel Games Slaytor in the early 1930s and was mainly used for home insulation (glass wool). When resin was invented in 1935, many scientists saw its potential. However, it needed a reinforcing material to make it work and that was when the popularity of fiberglass started to grow. Scientists then found a way to successfully mix it with resin to create a durable composite.
Today, close to two million tons of unsaturated polyester resin are produced annually around the world. It’s no doubt clear that fiberglass is a superb alternative to other materials like steel or PVC.
